This 38 Special ammunition delivers a powerful punch to your assailant instead of your wallet! Designed with a standard pressure load suitable for subcompact carry pistols, these defensive cartridges from Hornady fire a 125 grain jacketed hollow point XTP bullet at an above-average muzzle velocity of 900 feet per second. Each box contains 25 rounds.

The XTP bullet is an expanding design with a proven reputation for delivering strong penetration. This allows it to strike an attacker, reach a critical area, and cause incapacitation before that person can cause death or injury to others.

Hornady has been in the business of making bullets for over half a century and has also established a strong presence in the loaded ammunition market. The company is headquartered in Grand Island, Nebraska, where it also produces most of its products.

Ballistics Test Summary

Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Hornady 125 gr XTP American Gunner from a Kimber K6s from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.

How this load compares to other .38 Special loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.

We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Q: Is this plus p or standard 38 spl? Will these work in a charter arms pink lady?

A: Thanks for reaching out Ashlea! This is standard pressure 38 Special ammunition, not +P. We always point out when ammo is overpressure. This ammunition will function correctly in a Pink Lady.

Q: Can I run these through a smith and wesson model 10-2?

A: Absolutely, this ammo's chamber pressure isn't amplified and won't damage your older revolver. We'd only advise you to make sure your revolver is indeed chambered for 38 Special and not 38 Long Colt or 38 S&W. They are all different cartridges and not interchangeable with one another!
