00 Buck is the term designating the size of pellets contained within any given size of shotgun shell, anywhere from 10 gauge down to .410 shells. Shotgun shells (excluding slugs) differ from your standard pistol or rifle cartridges in that they have multiple projectiles and spread out upon leaving the barrel.
00 Buck loads in 12 gauge can have anywhere from 8-12 .33 caliber pellets per shell, all the way down to 4 pellets in a .410 shotshell. The pellets are most commonly made of lead, but are also made from steel in some loads to comply with certain laws that govern hunting practices.
