#9 Shot

#9 Birdshot is tiny, about 2.01 mm (0.079") in diameter. It comes in lead or steel shot, but note that lead shot has been banned in some states.

Primarily used for hunting grouse, partridge, doves, woodcock, pigeons and quail, they can be used in trap shooting (though #7 ½ is more common) and sporting clay shooting. #9 is also the primary shot type for skeet shooting.

Best chokes:

  • Grouse and partridge hunting - Improved Cylinder or Modified choke in brush and Full in the open;
  • Pigeons, woodcock, and doves - Improved Cylinder or Modified;
  • Quail - Cylinder, Improved Cylinder or Modified;
  • Trap - Full or Modified;
  • Skeet - Skeet or Modified;
  • Sporting clays - any choke.
