Using Small Pistol Primers

Small pistol primers are used in smaller handguns that have easily ignitable cartridges, or in any other situation in which ignition does not present a significant challenge. Since the primer is inevitably responsible for the firing of a bullet, significant research is conducted on the use and development of various small pistol primers and other reloading supplies.

Reliability is the most important attribute that any gun primer can have, and thus, extensive testing is performed on any round, primer, priming compound, cartridge and firearm before the product is released to the public. However, different primers should be used in the proper cartridges to prevent any mishaps due to the improper usage of reloading supplies.

Small pistol primers are commonly used in cartridges that use low caliber rounds like the 22 LR. This is because they are the weakest of all primers, and they are not suitable for use with larger cartridges such as the 45 ACP. While these primers can be used with the 45 ACP, it is recommended to use a large pistol primer or a large pistol magnum primer for such cartridges, since they have a larger case capacity than the smaller handguns.

Small pistol primers do more than simply ignite the propellant powder; they also cause a boost in pressure that can be dangerous if the primers are misused. The primer is also responsible for sealing the case to prevent hot gases from spewing into your face upon ignition of the propellant powder. Although small pistol primers are the least dangerous kind of primer available amongst other reloading supplies, they do represent a significant danger when stored in high quantities together.

The primary difference between a regular small pistol primer and a small pistol magnum primer is length and intensity at which the flame burns. In a regular small pistol primer, the flame does not need to burn as long or as strong to ignite the propellant. Therefore, regular small pistol primers are only used in scenarios where ignition is not difficult. Small pistol primers should not be used in guns with large case capacities or in situations where the temperature may drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Regardless of your previous expertise or the situation in which the cartridge is to be used, it is always best to refer to the manual that comes with your reloading supplies.

Even though primers contain less than a single grain of flammable material, it is best to keep them stored safely in their original casing. All combustible reloading supplies should be handled with care according to their original instructions and should not be used improperly.

Some of the most popular brands of small pistol primer in America are Federal, CCI, Remington, and Winchester. These reputable brands make various primers that can be used with almost every kind of firearm ever made.
