I've been using this as a self-defense load because it patterns well in my 20in barrel. They say you don't need a 3in shell, but if I don't mind the recoil (it is less than many hunting loads I have tried) I like to know I have a thicker pattern at the end of my range. Yes, within 10 feet it would not matter, but from 10 yards it might. I have heard on other reviews that if you use the right choke this holds a tight pattern, but with my cylinder choke in a 20in barrel this spreads pretty aggressively for me (which is what I want).

The value for price is excellent, but one issue I have noticed (that did not affect terminal performance) is that occasionally the crimping will leak the white powder material. I would not mind paying slightly more to have this not happen. The leakage is minor but annoying if you chamber the same shells a few times. I have never experienced this leakage with federal premium but I will admit I pay more for those as well. It definitely goes bang every time I pull the trigger.
