Newly manufactured by Federal, this product is excellent for self-defense, target practice, and tactical exercises.

Each round is brass-cased, boxer-primed, non-corrosive, and reloadable. The bullets are designed for maximum energy transfer upon impact but controlled expansion (a result of the jacketing).

The product is both economical and precision manufactured in the United States by an established U.S. cartridge producer. The American Eagle brand is a product line of the Federal Cartridge Co., which is owned by ATK, the largest ammunition manufacturer in the United States.

American Eagle is an ammo brand from Federal, and part of the larger ATK family of ammo companies, along with CCI, Blazer, and Speer. All of the ammo from the ATK companies is made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility right here in the US. American Eagle has a reputation for being some of Federal's best practice ammo. And it's also very affordable.

For this review, we had a chance to shoot a few rounds of one of the American Eagle 357 Magnum loads. American Eagle offers several different revolver cartridges with a variety of bullet types. This 357 Magnum round features a reloadable brass case with a noncorrosive primer.

The 158 grain bullet is a jacketed soft point. This is a multi-purpose bullet type that is suitable for self-defense or hunting but is still economical enough for practice on the range. The flat point lead tip is good for both penetration and expansion. And the partial jacket prevents the lead fouling in your gun's barrel. There are more modern, advanced hollow point rounds available for the same applications. But the jacketed soft point 357 bullet has been used successfully for decades by law enforcement, civilians and hunters.

The downside is the relatively strong-felt recoil. We tried the ammo in six different guns including five revolvers and one carbine. Recoil was a little harsh for a 357, especially in smaller revolvers. We could manage a few cylinders in our medium-size revolvers. But after just one round in a light weight Ruger LCR, I decided it was time for a lunch break.

We could still feel the recoil in the larger guns. But it was much easier to handle. Function and performance in all six test guns was perfect, with no extraction or ignition problems and smooth feeding in our lever action carbine. We used the carbine at 20 yards to test accuracy with a ten shot group. The results were pretty respectable with a tight group just a little low and right of the point of aim and a couple of fliers bringing the overall group size to just over two inches.

American Eagle is always a consistent performer. And this 357 Magnum load is perfect for what this caliber was designed to do, deliver a fast-moving, hard-hitting bullet from a small package.
