This 22 LR cartridge by Aguila has a 40 grain projectile, the standard weight for its caliber. Nevertheless, this round manages to deliver the fastest muzzle velocity of any in its caliber with such a bullet weight -- 1,470 fps, zippy enough to ensure a flat trajectory even after having traveled incredibly far downrange. Want to shoot each individual Crunch Berry out of Cap’n Crunch’s spoon the next time you plink with an old cereal box? Then this round’s the one to make it happen.

This cartridge’s bullet is plated with copper, so it prevents your rifle’s bore from dirtying up with lead as it’s en route to the muzzle. It is a solid point as well, and won’t expand within soft targets -- still, with so much energy to deliver on impact, this round’s in no way inadequate for capping varmints. Aguila tests their rimfire ammo according to Olympic standards, so your next backyard shooting extravaganza will be in good hands when you place your trust in them.

Ballistics Test Summary

As part of our ongoing self-defense ammo testing project, we used Clear Ballistics synthetic gelatin to evaluate the performance of Aguila 40 Grain. Five rounds were fired from a S&W 43C into the gel with a four-layer cloth barrier to simulate an attacker wearing heavy clothing.

The top image in the photo above shows the first round fired into the gel and the bottom photo displays all five rounds. Below on the left, you can see what the bullets look like after they were recovered from the gel. To the right of that, you’ll find a high-speed video of the first round fired into the gel. At the bottom of the page, we’ve got a chart with all the data from our Aguila 40 Grain test along with a couple of charts that show how this load compared to other .22 Long Rifle (LR) loads.
