This 223 Rem ammo by Brown Bear is not a good choice for actually hunting brown bear. Hit a half-ton apex predator with one of these rounds and in a few minutes it’ll be picking its teeth with your rifle. But for target practice on a tight budget, this Russian-made ammo is a great way to enjoy an AR-15!

Brown Bear’s 55 grain FMJ is magnetic. Their bimetal jacket substitutes a lot of copper with steel, so it still resists deformation during ignition and penetration but is a lot more cost-efficient on the production side of things. Ballistically this bullet performs just like any nonmagnetic bullet – its main shortcoming is not being acceptable by some ranges.

Brown Bear’s case is also magnetic, because it is made of steel instead of brass. Same reasoning behind it – substituting steel for an alloy that’s two-thirds copper simply makes ammo more affordable. Brown Bear’s case is lacquer-coated to enhance its corrosion resistance and ability to cycle smoothly through a semi-auto.

Steel cases are no good for reloading, and they are known to allow more carbon residue to accumulate in a firearm’s action. This ammo’s Berdan primers are non-corrosive, though, so you won’t have to go absolutely nuts cleaning out your rifle after burning through this case of Slavic ammo.
