Things that work tend to stick around. Those that don’t, don’t. The fact that Remington’s Core-Lokt has around for more than 80 years ought to tell you all you need to know about how well the classic hunting bullet gets its job done.

This 243 Win cartridge’s Core-Lokt is what’s known as a pointed soft point. Its spitzer profile is more aerodynamic than that of a round nose bullet, and it boasts a higher 0.356 ballistic coefficient because of it. This round’s 100 grain Core-Lokt transfers nearly 1,100 ft lbs of energy at 300 yards – more than enough to ground a whitetail humanely.

But the Core-Lokt doesn’t rely solely on brute force to subdue its target. Its exposed core lets it mushroom to spread all of that energy around quickly, and that core is locked to a jacket to help prevent fragmentation that could result in shallower penetration. This bullet’s jacket is also engineered to facilitate up to double diameter expansion. Remington calls it “the deadliest mushroom in the woods,” but that still doesn’t mean you can eat the pretty red and white ones.
