Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Federal 230 gr HST +P from a Kahr CW45 from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.
How this load compares to other .45 ACP (Auto) loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.
We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Great Ammo. Carried HST+P 230 for 10 years on duty. Though never used on a human; was very impressed with performances...

Functions perfectly in my 1911 pistols.
I own a pair of 1911 pistols, one of which is a Government model. These rounds demonstrate flawless feeding in both. I chronographed a full magazine. Avg was 956 fps. High was 966 fps, low was 949 fps. Thus, energy will vary slightly between 460 and 470 lb/ft. That's a lot of energy in a handgun. These are expensive, but that is offset by reliable feeding and the high energy. I originally bought five 20 round boxes at a local shop. I shot two magazines through each pistol to confirm feeding reliability. No issues. This is now my standard carry load, when I carry a 1911. Almost everything about the +P HST is positive, in my opinion. The only downsides are price and availability.
Great Ammo. Carried HST+P 230 for 10 years on duty. Though never used on a human; was very impressed with performances on a attacking dog, and numerous injured deer along the roadways. The shear destruction done to a deer's skull made you have faith in your equipment.
100% A÷ Top Tier!
These are the 1st 2 or 3 rounds out of the top of my magazine carried in my Glock 21 with the rest being Critical Duty because of their slightly more consistent penetration through windshields although the HST is reliable through sheet metal and side glass but excellent expansion means less chance of over-pinitration in soft targets.
You can't put a price on piece of mind...
Federal HST is some of the very best out there, and it shows.
Look around online, and see for yourself! Or better yet go shooting, and you'll see why it is such a highly recommended load for defensive applications.
It is accurate, reliable, consistent, and retains its weight as good, or better than any round out there.
On soft targets the 230Gr +P load is devastating. I have used this in the field many times, and have had excellent results on multiple types of game, and pests.
Another plus is it won't break the bank, so you can train more, and become a more proficient shooter for when things go awry!
I will continue to purchase, and use HST. I can bet my life on it doing its job, when I need it the most, and I believe you can too.
Purchased for my S&W Shield & SIG P220 Carry. The extra pressure boosts velocities of the 230gr hollow points into 900+ fps for very good bullet penetration and expansion. This ammo is for carry only; it's too hot for range practice on a steady basis. I run one magazine of this ammo through my carry guns only on occasion. HST +P POI is about 1" high at 7 yards compared to standard pressure ammo. Makes my SIG & Shield's muzzles jump. Ammo is clean burning and very reliable. Orders are filled promptly and usually arrive at my door within 48 hours. Lucky Gunner has the absolute best service I've found. Although I use this ammunition in my .45ACPs for my personal defense ammunition, this is the first time I've found it here. I'll definitely buy it here.
Great round overall
As posted in the standard pressure area for this round, I found both the standard and +P equally accurate and manageable, mag to mag. I will use both: one for close quarters and home and the other outside. I was very impressed; it's absolutely my new ammo for home protection.
Many thanks to Lucky Gunner for performing a comprehensive comparison on ballistics for self-defense rounds; it is both informative and it allows purchasers of such ammunition to get an in-depth understanding on how their ammunition will perform regarding expansion, penetration, velocity and weight retention.
Good Defensive Ammo Be Prepared to Pay
Great ammo, but I feel you're spending a lot of money for the name. I mean we're talking .45 is there really a need for JHP? That's for you to decide. But the +P is loaded HOT and recoil is stout in my 4" alloy 1911. follow up shots were noticeably slower because of this. Wouldn't bother in a full size 5" but with the shorter barrel I feel the extra pressure will help expansion. May just stick with ball for SD .45
This is what a police officer recommended to me for self defense ammo. That was many years ago and it has always stood the test of time. Never had a mis-fire due to ammo. I like Speer also, but the HST is the best and Federal just keeps making it better and better. It may be called Hydra-Shok or HST etc.. but its always a quality round and I bet my life on them.
I use a Colt 45 Defender. This ammo is accurate and it feeds perfectly without jamming. I consider it the best I have ever used through my Colt. I would recommend this ammo to anyone who wants a reliable round. (On target 100%)
Great product, great service!
As always the service and arrival of the product was great. Since I use these for defense I only ran a couple of clips through my Para Slim Hawg. Had absolutely no feeding/ejection issues and, at short range since that's all I shot, excellent accuracy. Very pleased.
I have an FNH FNX 45ACP, with 15 round mags, this ammo in particular is a +p and used as a test for the pistol, 3 mags spit right out like nothing and you could feel the +p, this is now what sits on my night stand, once again excellent service from L G !!!
possibly the best defensive handgun cartridge available today
This may be the best defensive handgun cartridge available today.
Hard to find because ATK normally sells the HST ammunition to law enforcement only, this round is highly destructive in soft tissue and also very resistant to clogging with clothing. Expansion to in excess of 1" in diameter is common with the .45 caliber version, combined with excellent penetration, even through hard barriers.
All the HST ammunition that contains bullets that are heavy for caliber (230gr .45, 180gr .40, and 147gr 9mm) are on the short list of ammunition that performs very well both in laboratory testing and on the street. Recommended without reservation, if you can get it.
