This 7mm WSM (Winchester Short Magnum) cartridge is from Hornady’s Outfitter line of ammunition, and a hardy round thanks not only to its brass casing’s corrosion resistant nickel plating, but also to its sealed primer and case mouth which essentially waterproof it. With one of these rounds rain may very well make you cold and miserable and put out your cigar, but it won’t deprive you of your ability to take a shot when your deer finally manifests itself. (Don’t smoke a cigar while you’re hunting, or the deer will passive aggressively pretend to cough at you from the bushes.)

This round is a safe bet for hunting in California thanks to its 150 grain mono-metal copper alloy GMX projectile. The GMX’s copper composition further means that it will foul your rifle’s bore very little when fired, and also that it’s able to retain 95 percent or more of its weight as it widens up to 1.5 times its original diameter during penetration. The GMX’s sleek profile, pressure relieving shank grooves, and pointed polymer tip make it an accurate bullet -- that tip further acts to initiate expansion upon impact as well.
