We’re not doing that today. What we can do is settle one piece of the puzzle: how much velocity you actually get from different barrel lengths with different ammunition.

We tested six barrel lengths across 16 different .223 Rem and 5.56×45 loads to answer a straightforward question: what’s the real-world velocity relationship between a 7-inch barrel and a 22-inch barrel? The data is interactive and sortable below. Use it as a reference point for optic calibration, ballistic calculation, or just to settle an argument with someone at the range. But it’s raw data. What you do with it depends on your application and your own testing.

What We Did

We measured velocity for 16 different .223 Rem and 5.56×45 ammo options with those six different barrel lengths. Our chronograph was a Garmin Xero C1 Pro positioned at the muzzle. For each ammo/barrel combo, we fired five shots and recorded the average velocity.

Our six test barrels were:

7-inch, 1:7 twist (PSA)

10.5-inch, 1:7 twist (PSA)

14.5-inch, 1:7 twist (BCM)

16-inch, 1:7 twist (BCM)

18-inch, 1:8 twist (BCM)

22-inch, 1:8 twist (FNH)

Why This Matters

I’ll be the first to admit that (almost) any day at the shooting range beats a day behind a desk. That said, gathering tons of velocity data is not exactly the most thrilling way to spend one’s range time. So why did we do it?

Mostly because, even though velocity data is something rifle shooters frequently ask about, real-world numbers are surprisingly difficult to come by. Ammo manufacturers typically publish the velocity of each load on their websites, or sometimes right on the box. And we usually include this info on our own 223 ammo product pages as well. But that velocity probably came from something like a 26-inch test barrel. It’s enough to give you a relative idea of what kind of velocity a specific load is technically capable of, but it’s rarely a reflection of what it will do out of your personal rifle.

Whether you’re looking for a starting point for optic calibration and ideal zero distance, or researching terminal ballistics and effective range, having real-world velocity data from a given load for multiple barrels can be extremely useful.

The Data

So without further fanfare, here’s the velocity data. class="column-7">3110

.223 Barrel Length: Velocity Gains Diminish Quickly

Of course, I couldn’t just offer a bunch of data without throwing in a few nerdy observations, right? Let’s look at the most obvious trend first – the diminishing returns you get as barrel length increases.

We see the sharpest velocity gains between our 7-inch and 10.5-inch test barrels. For each added inch of barrel, we got an additional 107 feet per second averaged out across all loads. That’s roughly 5% more velocity per inch.

Going from the 10.5-inch to the 14.5-inch barrel, the increase drops to 65 fps per inch. Still a noteworthy difference, but each inch is giving a smaller velocity bump.

From 14.5 to 16, the increase was 44 fps per inch and from 16 to 18-inches it was 35 fps per inch. So we’re already down to around 1.5% per inch by the time we get to 18.

The gains really plummet after that. From the 18-inch to the 22-inch barrel, the velocity increase was only 11 fps per inch. That’s a measly 0.4% per inch of barrel.

Based on these barrels and these 16 loads, it looks like you can expect huge velocity gains up to around 10.5 inches and moderate gains for every inch added from 10.5 to 18 inches. Beyond 18 inches, the velocity gains are modest enough that I think it’s difficult to justify the added barrel length for anything other than a dedicated target rifle.

Load Selection and Barrel Length

Let’s look at a slightly less obvious trend. For the 7-inch barrel, the velocity spread (the difference between the fastest and slowest rounds) is 644 fps. That spread increases along with barrel length. It’s 769 for the 10.5-inch barrel, 781 for the 14.5-inch, and 790 for the 16-inch. Then it jumps all the way up to 869 for the 18-inch barrel and then only rises to 879 with the 22-inch.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure what the takeaway is here. I do hear a lot of people talk about how important load selection is for short barreled ARs, but depending on your application, it looks like it may be just as, if not more important for longer barrels.

What Muzzle Velocity Doesn’t Tell You

Velocity is only part of the equation. We can make lots of inferences and guesses based on this data, but velocity doesn’t tell you much about things like felt recoil, reliability, accuracy, and bullet stability. There are some things you really can’t find out without doing some experimenting of your own at the range.

Terminal ballistics is the other big question here. Shooters have all sorts of different opinions and theories on ideal bullet weight or minimum velocity threshold required to obtain a certain effect on a flesh and blood target. I’ll save my take on that topic for another time, but the velocity numbers above ought to be just enough to get your own <del>argument</del> heated discussion started.

It probably goes without saying, but I should probably also mention that your barrel might produce different velocities with the same loads, even if the length is identical. Velocity is impacted by factors like altitude and temperature in addition to the small physical differences between each individual barrel. The numbers above should be pretty close to what you’ll see with other barrels of the same length, but don’t be surprised if your results vary.

Final Thoughts

The main takeaway here is straightforward: most of your velocity potential comes from the 7-inch to 14.5-inch range. Beyond 18 inches, you’re chasing diminishing returns that are probably not worth the added barrel length unless you’re building something specifically optimized for distance shooting.

For rifles in the 10.5-inch to 16-inch range, you’ve captured most of the velocity gains you’re going to get. Load selection matters, barrel-to-barrel variations will happen, and velocity is just one piece of a much larger ballistics puzzle. But at least now you’ve got actual numbers to base your barrel length decision on instead of guesses.

You can spend weeks online debating ideal bullet weights, minimum velocity thresholds, and what actually matters for terminal performance with … Continued

[6
26,25,89,539,315
post-12521","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-toolbox","tag-223-rem","tag-5-56x45","tag-rifles","tag-testing","tag-velocity

223 Ballistics and Barrel Length

<meta name="description" content="Real-world velocity data testing .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO across 6 barrel lengths and 16 loads.
