Honestly, the shotgun isn&#8217;t all that remarkable aside from the NFA-length barrel. Internally, it&#8217;s just like the millions of other 870s out there, and I&#8217;ve equipped it with some pretty mundane, albeit useful parts to make it more suitable for home defense. But a lot of our readers and viewers have been asking questions about the 14-inch barrel and whether it&#8217;s something I would recommend, so that&#8217;s the topic of today&#8217;s video. Watch below, or for the video impaired, scroll down to read the full transcript.<\/p> <div class=\"entry-content-asset\"><script src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/player.js\" async><\/script><script src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/embed\/i3srtixt41.js\" async type=\"module\"><\/script><\/p> <style>wistia-player[media-id='i3srtixt41']:not(:defined) &#x7B; background: center \/ contain no-repeat url('https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/embed\/medias\/i3srtixt41\/swatch'); display: block; filter: blur(5px); padding-top:56.25%; &#x7D;<\/style> <p> <wistia-player media-id=\"i3srtixt41\" seo=\"false\" dnt=\"1\" aspect=\"1.7777777777777777\"><\/wistia-player><\/div> <hr \/> <h3><strong>Remington 870 SBS<\/strong><\/h3> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wasn\u2019t planning to review this gun, but since I\u2019ve been using it in the last few videos, you guys have been asking a lot of questions about it, so today I\u2019m going to deliver some answers.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is my Remington 870 12 gauge short barreled shotgun. It started out as a cheap surplus police shotgun that I bought with no barrel. If you look closely, you can tell that it\u2019s pretty well used, but it\u2019s in great mechanical condition.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I replaced the stock with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magpul.com\/products\/sga-stock-remington-870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magpul SGA stock<\/a>. I\u2019ve removed all of the spacers in order to get the length of pull as short as possible and I\u2019ve added one of the Magpul cheek risers to raise the comb height.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The forend is also from Magpul. It\u2019s actually not my favorite design &#8212; I\u2019m not crazy about this lip here in the back,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but I like that it\u2019s really easy to attach a light. You can put a piece of rail on any of these slots on the forend and attach whatever light you want. I\u2019ve got this Inforce WMLX attached here, which works pretty well with the way I normally grip the forend [EDIT: after using this light for a while, it is not a model I would recommend for mounting on a shotgun].<\/span><\/p> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4700\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1.jpg\" alt=\"Remington 870 SBS with Inforce WMLX\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1-600x315.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-1-350x184.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mag tube extension is the only accessory I kept that was on the shotgun when I bought it. It\u2019s a Vang Comp Systems +1 extension, so I can get a total of five rounds in the tube.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side saddle is also from Vang Comp. It\u2019s a plate with Velcro on it that attaches with screws through the receiver. These Velcro-backed cards with the elastic loops just stick right to the plate.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The barrel is actually a Remington factory 14-inch barrel with a fixed modified choke. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remington doesn\u2019t typically sell these to the general market, but you can sometimes find them on the auction sites. I got this one for a little under $200. It came with XS express sights pre-installed &#8212; they\u2019ve got a v-notch rear and a big white dot on the front.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019m not a big fan of the XS sights on handguns, but I really like them for this shotgun. I\u2019ve found them to be a lot quicker to use than a ghost ring and more accurate than a bead sight.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Remington 870 is probably the easiest platform to start with for a short barreled shotgun, because it doesn\u2019t require any custom work and the factory barrels aren\u2019t too hard to come by.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this shotgun has\u00a0a barrel under 18-inches, it does fall under the National Firearms Act regulations. That basically means I had to pay a $200 tax and do a bunch of paperwork and wait a few months for Uncle Sam to process all that before I could legally install this barrel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you want to know more about how the whole NFA thing works, I\u2019ll put a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itstactical.com\/warcom\/firearms\/considerations-for-building-a-short-barreled-rifle-as-an-individual-or-an-nfa-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link to more information<\/a> in the video description.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I think the more pressing question a lot of you have is whether I think the short barrel is worth the extra $200. That\u2019s going to depend a lot on your individual situation, but I do think it\u2019s got some pretty compelling advantages.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like the way the gun balances better versus a typical 18 inch barrel. It\u2019s not a drastic difference, but it\u2019s noticeable. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also doesn\u2019t sacrifice anything in terms of shot spread. I can easily keep all the pellets inside the vital zone of a target at 15 yards with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/12-ga-2-3-4-00-buck-federal-8p-law-enforcement-flitecontrol-wad-5-round\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federal Flite Control 00 buckshot<\/a>.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly though, the short barrel\u00a0on the Remington 870 SBS\u00a0is a lot more maneuverable inside a house. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve done some dry practice at home and at the range with some obstacles set up and I was surprised at just how much easier it is to get around furniture and doors and that kind of thing.<\/span><\/p><p><\/p> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4701\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2.jpg\" alt=\"Remington 870 SBS\" width=\"1200\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2-600x158.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2-1024x270.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2-768x202.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/Remington-870-SBS-2-350x92.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not suggesting anyone try to go hunt bad guys and clear their own house alone. But even just staying put in one room, the shorter barrel is easier to work with and for me, it also makes the gun a little quicker retrieve from where I have it stored.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some disadvantages to the short barreled shotgun.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s got a shorter magazine tube than you can get with a longer barrel, and that means you have one or two fewer rounds of ammo capacity. More ammo is certainly a good thing, but I\u2019ve explained before why capacity is not nearly as critical with a shotgun as with a handgun or a carbine.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The purpose of using a shotgun to solve a problem is precisely because historically, they haven&#8217;t required multiple hits to stop a threat. To paraphrase <a href=\"http:\/\/rangemaster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Givens<\/a>, if you\u2019ve got five rounds in a shotgun, then you&#8217;ve got a &#8220;five bad guy gun.&#8221; And personally, I\u2019m pretty happy with that.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capacity is not the only perceived disadvantage. The short barrel may not be as PR friendly as a more typical shotgun and that might be a big deal for some people. You also have to fill out paperwork and get permission from the ATF any time you want to take a short barreled shotgun across state lines, which is kind of a pain if you travel a lot.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, for me personally, I think the benefits of the 14-inch barrel outweigh the potential disadvantages, but it\u2019s not what I\u2019d call an essential modification. If you\u2019ve already got a decent shotgun with an 18 or 20-inch barrel, your money is probably better spent on a few cases of ammo and a good training class. But if you\u2019ve still got some room in the budget after that, I do think the short barrel makes the shotgun more convenient to use and might be worth considering.<\/span><\/p>
