Beyond about 30 to 50 yards, the spread from most shotguns becomes too unpredictable to reliably guarantee that any of the pellets will hit the intended target. But what if circumstances dictated that you had to take that shot anyway? How effective is buckshot at extended ranges? We\u2019re doing something a little different today. This is a little thing we like to call \u201cStuff John and Chris Wanna Know.\u201d So John, tell us, what do we want to know today?<\/p> <p>JOHN: Well, we were talking about it and what we wanted to know was, &#8220;how far out can we take buckshot and still have it pass the FBI heavy clothing terminal ballistics standard?&#8221; So, that\u2019s what we did.<\/p> <p>CHRIS: Right, so we\u2019re looking for 12-18\u201d of penetration in ballistic gelatin. So we set up a couple of blocks and shot it at ten feet. That\u2019s our control, that\u2019s what we do with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/labs\/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests\/\">handgun ammo<\/a>. Then we took it out to 25 [yards], and then 50, and then 100 yards. We used two different loads: Federal FliteControl #1 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/12-ga-2-3-4-00-buck-federal-8p-law-enforcement-flitecontrol-wad-250-round\">Federal FliteControl #00 8-pellet<\/a>. We chose those because, well, we like them first of all, but they hold a really tight pattern and it\u2019s not feasible to do this at 50, 100 yards if you\u2019ve got the pellets going all over the place.<\/p> <figure id=\"attachment_7245\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7245\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp-600x195.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp-1024x333.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp-768x250.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/mossberg-vang-comp-350x114.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 12 gauge Mossberg 590 with a 14-inch Vang Comp customized barrel was used for the test. Federal FliteControl ammo works best with barrels that feature an open choke\/cylinder bore.<\/figcaption><\/figure> <p>So it was interesting to see the difference between the #1 and the #00. I know that [#00 buckshot] penetrates a little more at 10 feet in the standard test, and for us, we verified that. It was about 14-ish inches on the #1 and around 18 on the #00. Then at 50, the #00 was penetrating about where the #1 was at 25.<\/p> <p>JOHN: So, for anyone watching, the reason why that is, is that the #00 pellets have a little more mass behind them so they\u2019re going to penetrate a little bit deeper if they\u2019re moving at about the same velocity, which &#8212; those loads are pretty close. If I remember correctly, there\u2019s only 75 feet per second difference. [<em>Federal&#8217;s advertised velocity is<\/em><em> 1100 for the #1 versus 1145 for the #00. -CB<\/em>]<\/p> <p>CHRIS: Yeah, they\u2019re around 1100 feet per second.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Right. So, that was kinda interesting. I thought what was really sort of fun was &#8212; when does the shotgun become, \u201cokay, I can hit stuff reliably. Maybe not with the entire load, but <em>enough<\/em>\u201d to \u201cHmmm, how many rounds are we going to fire to get enough pellets into this block?\u201d<\/p> <p>CHRIS: I don\u2019t know if you guys know about the #1 FliteControl, but it\u2019s a difficult load to get ahold of, so we didn\u2019t have a whole lot of it on hand. So, we didn\u2019t actually test that one at 100, but we had plenty of the #00, so it took us, what, 11 or 12 shells to get 3 pellets in the gelatin at that distance?<\/p> <p>JOHN: Right. And the other thing, too &#8212; keep in mind the forward-facing area of those was like, what, 5\u201dx6\u201d, something like that?<\/p> <p>CHRIS: I think the gel blocks are 6\u201dx6\u201d and at 100, we put two of them side by side so we had a 12&#8243;x6&#8243; area we\u2019re trying to hit with a big buckshot spread that\u2019s only eight pellets.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Would you still be hitting stuff at that distance? Yeah, but we were more interested in what the rounds are actually doing at that distance. The #1 was starting to fail the FBI test &#8212; it was starting to be underneath the 12-inch penetration.<\/p> <p>CHRIS: Yeah, it was around nine inches at 50 [yards].<\/p> <p>JOHN: So, still potentially lethal &#8212; absolutely.<\/p> <p>CHRIS: Absolutely.<\/p> <p>JOHN: But not passing the FBI standards. The #00 still was. And then when we got out to 100&#8230; the #00 was doing what the #1 was doing at 50, which was kind of interesting to me.<\/p><p><\/p> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test-600x230.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test-1024x392.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test-768x294.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.luckygunner.com\/lounge\/media\/buckshot-gel-test-350x134.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p> <p>CHRIS: Yeah, so I think if there\u2019s any big takeaway here, it\u2019s that, in most cases &#8212; and every shotgun is different &#8212; but your pattern is going to become pretty much useless before the pellets are no longer doing what you want them to do.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Right, so, if that\u2019s what you\u2019ve got and you have something out there and it\u2019s a contextually appropriate shot&#8230;<\/p> <p>CHRIS: If it\u2019s the only &#8212; we could come up with some scenario where it makes sense but it\u2019s going to be pretty rare.<\/p> <p>JOHN: So for me, I guess the big takeaway was that inside of 25, the shotgun is devastating. The pattern is &#8212; you\u2019re accountable for every single round in that pattern onto a man-sized target, easily. And either [load is still meeting] the FBI standards. Out to 50, you are still lethal, you\u2019re still getting the majority of the pellets onto someone, if that\u2019s what you\u2019re shooting at, but you\u2019re starting to lose ones off of the target which, depending on what you\u2019ve got going on, is a problem. If I were interested in animal control or something like that, would I take a shot at 50 on something? Absolutely, and I&#8217;d expect to hit it, at least with enough to probably put it down. Past 50 is where I go, \u201chmmmm, I don\u2019t know about this.\u201d<\/p> <p>CHRIS: Right, and that\u2019s with your gun. We need to mention we were using your [Mossberg 590 with a] Vang Comp barrel that\u2019s optimized for FliteControl. I\u2019ve got a Beretta 1301 that actually patterns with #1 at 25 about like what your barrel was doing, so &#8212; probably about the same thing for that particular gun, but I\u2019ve got other shotguns that don\u2019t pattern like that.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Well, they don\u2019t pattern with anything and that\u2019s the thing &#8212; I kind of wonder if most of people\u2019s opinion on shotguns are based off of one shotgun they had that they did this one thing with and then never did anything else. At this point, you and I are both shotgun nerds. Like, for me, it\u2019s still probably my go-to inside of anything where I can reasonably expect a 50 yard shot or in. When the pellets strike a soft target, they separate from the wad and slam into each other, creating a &#8220;billiard ball effect&#8221; that disperses the pellets forward in all directions.<\/figcaption><\/figure> <p>CHRIS: I guess the big thing is that context is really important and shotguns can do a lot of different things depending on what hardware you\u2019re using and what ammo you\u2019re using.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Yeah, and the whole point of what did we want to know was just, flat out, not \u201cis it appropriate to shoot this distance\u201d not anything other than \u201cwhat does it do?\u201d<\/p> <p>CHRIS: \u201cWhat does it do?\u201d, yeah. Buckshot will kill you at 100 yards. I think that\u2019s pretty safe to say.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Yeah\u2026. Yeah. Wait, &#8220;will&#8221; or &#8220;can&#8221;?<\/p> <p>CHRIS: Can.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Okay.<\/p> <p>CHRIS: It will if it hits you in the right place, I\u2019d say.<\/p> <p>JOHN: Right.
