Expansion Mono Block (EMB) bullets are monolithic projectiles machined from solid copper or brass with engineered expansion cavities. Unlike traditional bullets with separate cores and jackets, EMB bullets cannot separate—100% of the bullet weight stays together. The hollow cavity (often with scored petals) initiates controlled expansion while the solid shank ensures deep penetration. EMB-type bullets are popular for hunting where lead-free ammunition is required and for applications demanding maximum penetration with reliable expansion.
Similar concept—both are monolithic expanding bullets. TSX is Barnes' trademarked version. 'EMB' is a more generic term used by various manufacturers. Performance is comparable when comparing similar quality products.
Why are monolithic bullets more expensive?
Machining solid copper is more complex than swaging lead cores into jackets. Material costs are higher, and precision manufacturing is required for consistent weight and expansion. The performance benefits justify the cost for serious hunting applications.
