Lead Flat Nose (LFN) bullets feature an all-lead construction with a flat (truncated) tip. This design is essential for lever-action rifles with tubular magazines, where pointed bullets risk detonating primers of cartridges stacked in the tube. The flat nose also creates a larger wound channel than round nose designs due to the increased meplat (frontal area). Popular in classic lever-action calibers like .45-70 Government, .44 Magnum, .38-55, and .30-30 Winchester. Hard-cast lead versions handle higher velocities without leading.
Safety. Pointed bullets in tubular magazines can strike the primer of the cartridge ahead during recoil, causing a chain detonation. Flat nose bullets eliminate this risk while still providing effective terminal performance.
Hard cast vs soft lead LFN?
Hard cast (lead alloys with antimony) can be pushed to higher velocities (~1,400 fps) without leading. Soft lead is cheaper but should stay under ~1,000 fps. For hunting, hard cast offers deeper penetration.
