Solid Copper Hollow-Point (SCHP) bullets are machined or formed entirely from copper with no lead core. The hollow cavity is typically deeper than traditional HP designs, often with pre-cut petals that peel back uniformly upon impact. This monolithic construction offers several advantages: 100% weight retention (no core-jacket separation), deep penetration, lead-free composition for environmental compliance, and consistent expansion. Barnes, Hornady (GMX), and Nosler (E-Tip) are leading manufacturers. SCHPs are required in certain hunting areas with lead restrictions.
Weight retention and penetration. SCHPs don't fragment or separate, so 100% of bullet weight penetrates. This makes them ideal for large, tough game. They're also required in California condor zones and other lead-restricted areas.
Do solid copper bullets expand reliably?
Yes, modern designs expand very reliably. Pre-scored petals and optimized cavity depth ensure consistent expansion across a wide velocity range. Early solid copper bullets had expansion issues, but current designs from Barnes, Hornady, and Nosler are excellent.
