Speer® brought sport shooters and law enforcement the excellence of Lawman over 35 years ago. Back in 1968, the line included various calibers of centerfire handgun ammunition, and quickly earned a reputation as a high-performance and reliable product.

Lawman is attractively priced, and the cases are reloadable with clean-burning propellants and reliable CCI primers to complete the package.

Video Transcript:

The ATK family of ammo companies includes Speer, CCI, Federal, Blazer, and the Lake City Military ammo plant. Together they form the largest ammo maker in the world.

Each of ATK's ammo brands has a slightly different focus. And the Speer brand is well-known for producing excellent hunting and self-defence ammo like the famous Speer Gold Dot. They also produce full metal jacket product designed for training, like the Speer Lawman in 9mm that we just had a chance to test out.

Most but not all of the ammo from the Lawman line is loaded to a slightly higher velocity than normal in order to mimic the recoil impulse of the more powerful Gold Dot self-defense loads.

The ammo we tested for this review is the Lawman 115 grain 9mm, which has a velocity of just 1,200 feet per second. This puts it on par with most other 9mm practice ammo, with a slightly milder recoil than you would find in most self-defense loads.

Despite having a normal velocity, this 9mm Lawman is still a great training round. Each cartridge features a re-loadable brass case with a non-corrosive primer. The bullet has a lead core with a copper jacket, and is technically what we would call a full metal jacket. But it's a little different. This is actually Speer's total metal jacket, meaning that the whole core is completely covered by the jacket, unlike most bullets which leave a little lead exposed on the bottom. This means that slightly less toxic lead residue is released into the air when the rounds are fired. That makes Speer Lawman ideal for extended training in an indoor environment, where minimizing airborne toxins is essential.

Reliability with this ammo is great. We tried it in several different test guns and didn't have a single feeding malfunction or ignition failure.

We also experienced great accuracy, which we tested from the bench at 15 yards using a Beretta 92. We went back later with our Beretta Carbine and got an even better group out of 25 yards.

Speer Lawman has just about everything you could want in a practice load. It's accurate, reliable, has reloadable brass, and is even a little safer for indoor ranges than most ammo.

James Nichols ( Mon, 11 Nov 2013 13:19:07 +0000 ) : This is my second time to purchase this ammo. I use it mostly for practice and IDPA. It's good ammo. I have not had any problems with it and found it affordable. I will buy again.

Good product, prompt delivery through LuckyGunner. Missed the special pricing by a day and suffered from post election buying activity. Ouch! Review by WP
I use this in my SIG P229 in private lessons and a weekly pistol league. I have shot 300 rounds so far with No FTF or FTE. Good product. As expected, LuckyGunner delivered the product promptly in time to keep me in ammo for the classes and the completions. It was unfortunate timely that I ran out of ammo around the election and missed the special pricing by a day and got hit by a price jump. Ouch!!! (Posted on 12/6/12)
functioned, no jams. Review by robert
Went through 700 or so rounds of this with a new Glock 17 gen 4. No problems at all. Shipping and price were decent, great for range shooting without the expensive price tag. (Posted on 5/15/12)

Speer Lawman 115gr 9mm Review Review by Grizzly
Speer Lawman is great practice 9mm. My Sig Sauer P226 MK25 and Smith & Wesson M&P 9 love this ammo. Get it when you can while its available. (Posted on 5/8/12)
Accurate clean burning ammo Review by Puddle Duck 45
I've shot thousands of these rounds and have never had a problem. They are a little hotter round than some, which keeps the pistol alive in your hand. Not like some of these cheaper other brands that feel like duds going off in your hand. You that shoot a lot know what I'm talking about. Great product Great price Great service!! (Posted on 5/2/12)
Excellent Review by Irene
No problems with the rounds, all are of equal quality. (Posted on 5/1/12)
Getting about 3-4 FTEs per box of 50 on my first 3 boxes Review by gguldens
Ordered 2,000 rounds. Not unhappy with the product. In my Taurus 24/7G2B-17 I am seeing about 3-4 FTEs per box of 50. In my last test earlier today, I took my weapon and the 3 magazines to the range with the 3 mags pre-loaded with American Eagle 115gr FMJ. Shot all 3 magazines with no problems. Reloaded the 3 mags with the Speer Lawman and the first mag shot with no issues. Mag 2 had 2 FTEs and mag 3 had 1 FTE. Reloaded all 3 mags with another 50 American Eagle and shot them all with no problem. I can't say for certain what the issue is, but I have contacted Speer with this report to see if they want to investigate the issue. I will post my results in another review. BTW, I just purchased another Taurus 9mm and I will try the Speer in that weapon when it arrives. I have no intention of returning my purchase, just trying to figure out the issue here. I will very likely buy more Speer in the future. (Posted on 4/17/12)
