Lawman is attractively priced, and the cases are reloadable with clean-burning propellants and reliable CCI primers to complete the package.
Video Transcript:The ATK family of ammo companies includes Speer, CCI, Federal, Blazer, and the Lake City Military ammo plant. Together they form the largest ammo maker in the world.
Each of ATK's ammo brands has a slightly different focus. And the Speer brand is well-known for producing excellent hunting and self-defence ammo like the famous Speer Gold Dot. They also produce full metal jacket product designed for training, like the Speer Lawman in 9mm that we just had a chance to test out.
Most but not all of the ammo from the Lawman line is loaded to a slightly higher velocity than normal in order to mimic the recoil impulse of the more powerful Gold Dot self-defense loads.
The ammo we tested for this review is the Lawman 115 grain 9mm, which has a velocity of just 1,200 feet per second. This puts it on par with most other 9mm practice ammo, with a slightly milder recoil than you would find in most self-defense loads.
Despite having a normal velocity, this 9mm Lawman is still a great training round. Each cartridge features a re-loadable brass case with a non-corrosive primer. The bullet has a lead core with a copper jacket, and is technically what we would call a full metal jacket. But it's a little different. This is actually Speer's total metal jacket, meaning that the whole core is completely covered by the jacket, unlike most bullets which leave a little lead exposed on the bottom. This means that slightly less toxic lead residue is released into the air when the rounds are fired. That makes Speer Lawman ideal for extended training in an indoor environment, where minimizing airborne toxins is essential.
Reliability with this ammo is great. We tried it in several different test guns and didn't have a single feeding malfunction or ignition failure.
We also experienced great accuracy, which we tested from the bench at 15 yards using a Beretta 92. We went back later with our Beretta Carbine and got an even better group out of 25 yards.
Speer Lawman has just about everything you could want in a practice load. It's accurate, reliable, has reloadable brass, and is even a little safer for indoor ranges than most ammo.
