#8 Birdshot is about 2.26mm/.084" in diameter, while #8 1/2 runs 2.16 mm (0.085"). Both are made with lead or steel shot.
They are used for hunting grouse, partridge, doves, woodcock, pigeons and quail. They are also used in trap (though less commonly than 7 1/2), skeet (#9 is most common for skeet) and sporting clay shooting. For grouse and partridge hunting an Improved Cylinder or Modified choke is best in brush and a Full choke in open areas.
For pigeons, woodcock, and doves, use either an Improved Cylinder or Modified choke Quail requires either a Cylinder, Improved Cylinder or Modified choke. Trap shooting requires a Full or Modified choke. Skeet shooting can use a Skeet or Modified choke. Sporting clay shooting may use any choke, depending on the practice desired.
