The soft point bullet, also known as a soft-nosed bullet, is a lead expanding bullet with a copper or brass jacket that is left open at the tip, exposing some of the lead inside. Soft-Point (SP) bullets are generally rifle rounds.
This makes SP bullets a good hunting round, as the exposed lead tip allows it to expand upon impact. The deformation of the nose creates slower expansion and greater penetration than a hollow point of the same caliber would. This is more desirable for such things as hunting big game in areas where hollow points aren’t allowed or where other restrictions have been imposed.
