Waterfowl
You're going to need steel shot if you want to go hunting for ducks or other waterfowl. This Super-X load for 12 gauge shotguns fires a 1-1/8 oz. load of #4 steel shot at a muzzle velocity of 1,400 feet per second. This above-average velocity helps the lighter steel pellets reach farther and hit harder.
These 2-3/4" shells fire larger pellets than most steel loads and work well against larger waterfowl due to their higher penetration. However, #4 birdshot is not powerful enough for self-defense (and is not to be confused with #4 buckshot, which is roughly twice its diameter).
