Barnes loads this aptly named Defense Buckshot shell with 15 individual pellets of 00 buckshot. We only need to do the math to show you just how powerful that makes it. The ~1-1/8 ounce shot column belches out of the barrel at a velocity of 1,225 fps. At that rate all 15 pellets combined share a muzzle energy of approximately 2,733 ft lbs. That’s over double the muzzle energy of an AR-15’s 223 Rem round – plus you’re putting 15 times as many holes into your target.
This ammunition is made in Utah by Barnes. The old company selects hard lead for their shot pellets, as that helps them to resist deformation which could (A) weaken pattern density, and (B) limit penetration depth. This 3” magnum shell would also certainly topple a whitetail, and you can trust its high-grade primers and hulls to function correctly whether you’re putting dinner under your family’s noses or defending them from a home invader.
