#3 Buckshot is sized about 6.35 mm (0.250") in diameter. Its use is for medium to smaller game.

It is not a first choice for defense purposes since it contains a larger amount of smaller pellets. The shot is usually lead, but it can be had in steel for regions that ban lead shot. However, the lead does not have the range and penetrating power of steel.
