Copper-Plated Hollow-Point (CPHP) bullets feature a thin layer of copper electroplated over a lead core with a hollow cavity. This plating reduces lead fouling in the barrel compared to pure lead bullets while keeping costs below fully jacketed designs. The thin plating (typically 0.002-0.003") doesn't significantly affect expansion—the bullet still expands like a lead hollow point. CPHPs bridge the gap between budget lead bullets and premium JHPs, offering decent terminal performance for training and backup defense use.
Not quite. The thin plating doesn't control expansion like a true jacket. CPHPs expand more aggressively and may fragment. For primary defense, JHP is preferred. CPHP works for training or budget backup ammunition.
Does copper plating improve feeding?
Yes, somewhat. The smooth copper surface feeds better than bare lead in semi-autos. However, the plating can be scraped off by aggressive feed ramps. Most CPHPs work fine in quality firearms but may have issues in tight-tolerance guns.
