Lead Hollow Point (LHP) bullets are pure lead projectiles with a hollow cavity in the nose. Without jacketing, these bullets expand aggressively upon impact and are extremely cost-effective. LHPs are primarily used in revolvers, as the soft lead would foul semi-automatic barrels quickly and the bullet profile doesn't feed reliably. The unjacketed design also limits velocity—at high speeds, lead bullets can leave deposits in the barrel and accuracy suffers. For revolver shooters seeking maximum expansion at moderate velocities, LHP offers excellent terminal performance.
Soft lead doesn't feed reliably through semi-auto actions—it can deform when hitting the feed ramp. Lead also fouls barrels quickly at higher velocities. Revolvers avoid both issues by not requiring feeding and typically running lower velocities.
Are LHP bullets effective for self-defense?
Yes, in appropriate applications. Classic .38 Special and .44 Special LHP loads have proven track records. The aggressive expansion compensates for moderate velocities. Just ensure adequate penetration (12"+) with your specific load.
