Hollow-Point (HP) bullets feature a cavity machined into the bullet's nose that causes the projectile to expand upon impact with soft tissue. This expansion increases the bullet's diameter, creating larger wound channels and transferring more energy to the target. The basic HP design has been refined over decades, leading to various specialized versions including jacketed (JHP), bonded, and solid copper variants. Unjacketed HP bullets are primarily used in revolvers where feeding reliability isn't a concern, while modern semi-automatics typically use jacketed versions for reliable cycling.
JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) has a copper jacket that helps the bullet feed reliably in semi-automatic pistols and provides more controlled expansion. Plain HP bullets are typically unjacketed lead, best suited for revolvers.
Are hollow points legal?
In the US, hollow points are legal for civilian use in most states. New Jersey has restrictions on carrying HP ammunition. Some countries ban or restrict HP ammo for civilian use. Always check local laws.
