Semi-Jacketed Hollow-Point (SJHP) bullets feature a copper jacket that covers only the base and sides of the bullet, leaving the lead core exposed at the nose and in the hollow cavity. This partial jacketing provides a balance between the aggressive expansion of pure lead hollow points and the controlled expansion of fully jacketed designs. The exposed lead initiates expansion readily upon impact, while the jacket provides structural support to prevent fragmentation. SJHPs are popular in revolvers where the feeding advantages of full jacketing aren't necessary, offering excellent terminal performance at moderate cost.
JHP offers more controlled expansion and better feeding in semi-autos. SJHP expands more readily and costs less, making it ideal for revolvers where feeding isn't a concern. Both are effective for defense.
Can I use SJHP in a semi-auto?
Generally not recommended. The exposed lead nose can catch on feed ramps, causing malfunctions. Use JHP for semi-automatic pistols; save SJHP for revolvers.
