Lead Round Nose Flat Point (LRNFP) bullets blend characteristics of round nose and flat nose designs. The bullet has a generally rounded ogive but with a small flat tip (meplat) at the very point. This provides tubular magazine safety while maintaining a more aerodynamic profile than pure flat nose bullets. LRNFP designs feed more reliably than sharp-shouldered flat nose bullets in some actions and offer a compromise between BC and terminal effectiveness. Common in cowboy action shooting and lever-action rifle ammunition.
Both are tubular-magazine safe. LRNFP feeds more smoothly due to the rounded profile and has slightly better BC. LFN hits harder due to larger meplat. For cowboy action, LRNFP is popular; for hunting, many prefer LFN.
Is LRNFP used in cowboy action shooting?
Yes, extensively. The design meets SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) requirements for lead bullets while feeding reliably in period-correct revolvers and lever actions. Many competitors favor LRNFP for its balance of performance and feeding.
