The Hornady SST (Super Shock Tip) is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet designed for rapid expansion and devastating terminal performance on deer-sized game. The red polymer tip initiates expansion while the InterLock ring mechanically locks the core and jacket together to prevent separation. SST bullets deliver dramatic wound channels with good weight retention. They're particularly popular in factory ammunition for deer hunting, available across most popular hunting calibers. For larger or tougher game, Hornady recommends the bonded Interbond or InterLock designs.

SST vs V-MAX?

V-MAX is designed to fragment on varmints; SST is designed to expand on deer. SST has thicker jackets, InterLock rings, and much better penetration. Never use V-MAX on deer-sized game; SST is specifically designed for it.

Is SST too explosive for elk?

SST can work on elk with perfect shot placement, but it expands aggressively and may not penetrate enough on large animals or tough angles. For elk and larger, Hornady recommends Interbond (bonded) or ELD-X (higher weight retention).
