Just beneath that black polymer shell lies a full-length heat-treated steel insert, which is further safeguarded against impact by its polymer base pad.
The spine of the magazine features a number of witness holes. When the mag is loaded, those holes show how many remains remain. When it is empty, they only provide a view of the mag’s high tensile strength spring (which may or may not already be broken in; we have not discerned how “used” each of these mags actually is).
