This 223 Rem cartridge comes all the way from Russia and boasts some truly impressive features. It’s economical, to be sure, yet you can still fire it at ranges that ban magnetic projectiles!

A Black Bear cartridge has a steel shell casing. Steel is and always will be the budget conscious shooter’s friend, as it is far more economical to produce than brass. Steel also makes it thoroughly more convenient when it comes time to pick up your casings, so long as you have a magnet. Black Bear’s steel casings wear a thin coating of heat resistant polymer, which serves to prevent rusting during storage and subsequently reduce friction during feeding and extraction.

Steel is not reloadable, which is a moot point for shooters who don’t reload anyway. Steel may also permit more carbon fouling in the action, but these rounds’ modern non-corrosive Berdan primers won’t demand additional measures during cleaning.

This round’s 55 grain bullet has a boat tail, a feature which reduces in-flight drag to deliver a faster velocity downrange and improved resistance against wind drift. Unlike many Russian-made bullets, this round’s has a full metal jacket made entirely of nonmagnetic cartridge brass. It is still substantial enough to promote smooth feeding and prevent subsequent deformation, yet contains no steel that could create dangerous sparks when it strikes a hard surface!
