We wouldn’t say this is “gimmick ammo,” because it does its job exceedingly well. That said, there is something unusual about it: It is loaded with two different types of #6 lead shot. The first is Federal’s proprietary FliteStopper pellets, which have raised cutting edges that inflict a mix of deeper and wider wound channels. The second is copper-plated shot, which withstands acceleration and impact without becoming too flat to pattern tightly or penetrate deeply.
Federal’s FliteControl Flex wad is a coveted feature in many hunting rounds. The one-piece plastic wad flares out multiple petals around its base before exiting the muzzle. The petals act as air brakes of sorts, which helps the shot pellets flow downrange in a narrower, more predictable pattern.
Federal makes fine shotshells in Minnesota: clean-sparking, hard-hitting and reliable as all get out. Anyone who reviews this ammo negatively might just be a pheasant that taught itself how to use the internet.
