A lot of American-made ammo sports a patriotic bald eagle on its packaging. In that vein, what better animal could you choose for Russian-made ammo than a handsome bear? Brown Bear’s 223 Rem cartridge exists to help you do two very important things: shoot as much as you’d like to, and save big dough in the process.

Brown Bear makes an accessibly priced round by taking full advantage of economical steel. That starts with the bullet. This round’s 223 Rem bullet sports a bi-metal jacket, with a thin copper exterior that keeps a bore cleaner and a steel interior that strengthens the bullet without the need for so much valuable copper. Of course, that makes this round’s projectile a magnetic one that some ranges might take issue with, but otherwise you’ll enjoy conventional ballistic performance with a 3,050 fps muzzle velocity.

Brown Bear also utilizes steel shell casings, removing the need for any of the valuable brass that can drive range ammo’s price tag in the wrong direction. They help their steel cases cycle more reliably in a semi-auto and resist corrosion during storage by coating them with heat-resistant lacquer. (The lacquer’s color puts the “Brown” in Brown Bear.) Steel, of course, is not reloadable, nor does it seal the chamber as effectively to prevent carbon fouling in the action. Still, many shooters would gladly spend a little more time cleaning if that means they get to keep more cheddar in their bank accounts.

The Berdan type primer arouses suspicion in many shooters, but Brown Bear’s primers are any bit as non-corrosive as what you would expect from a modern, American cartridge. This round’s propellant also takes advantage of recent advancements in clean burning technology, making for an altogether worthy round for your upcoming hours plinking and popping targets!
