“I want to hunt with my 30-06 Springfield rifle,” you might say, “but I don’t want to spend my money on brass.” You sound like a prime candidate for Barnaul’s 30-06 ammunition, which in true Russian fashion utilizes the cost-reducing power of steel!

Most noticeably, this rifle ammunition has steel cases. These are far more economical for Barnaul to produce than traditional brass. Steel lacks brass’s elasticity, however, and as such is not suitable for handloading back at home. Barnaul does help their ammo cycle more efficiently by coating their cases with low-friction polymer, however, and their Berdan primers are every bit as non-corrosive as the Boxer primers you’d find in American-made ammunition.

This round’s 168 grain bullet also contains steel. As a soft point its lead core is exposed at the tip, which causes the bullet to expand as it meets with resistance from soft tissue. The soft point’s bimetal jacket fortifies it to prevent splintering apart, which helps to retain the weight necessary for deeper penetration. It’s a good bullet for deer, and more than powerful enough for smaller game as well!
