This case of .38 Special “Defend” rounds from Winchester’s Train & Defend line holds 200 cartridges, each with a durable, smooth feeding nickel-plated brass case and jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullet. On contact with a target, JHP bullets undergo controlled expansion that hits harder and makes a bigger wound channel than a full metal jacket (FMJ) round would. The jacket holds the bullet together so it can penetrate deeper than a non-jacketed hollow point round. This intermediate quality makes JHP bullets a favorite among law enforcers and concealed carriers.

Winchester’s Train and Defend line of ammunition is intended to help new shooters become proficient with their defensive carry firearms using inexpensive, low-recoil ammunition. It’s split into two kinds of ammo, aptly named “Train” and “Defend”. The Train ammunition is loaded into brass cases with FMJ bullets and a “T” on the box. The Defend ammunition uses a JHP bullet and nickel-plated brass case; the box is marked with a “D” (this listing is for a box of Defend ammunition). As the name suggests, the Train ammunition is intended to be an inexpensive way to practice, while the Defend ammo is pricier and intended for actual use in defensive situations. Both rounds feel identical to the shooter at the range, which makes the Train & Defend system a great way for new shooters to master their firearm without shooting lots of expensive ammo.
