Boxer Primers

Boxer Primers

Common Reloadable

Boxer primers, invented by Colonel Edward Mounier Boxer of the British Army in 1866, revolutionized ammunition by placing the anvil inside the primer cup rather than in the cartridge case. This elegant design features a single, centered flash hole in the primer pocket, making spent primers easy to remove with a simple punch through the case mouth. The self-contained nature of Boxer primers—containing priming compound, cup, and anvil in one unit—means cases can be reloaded repeatedly without special tools. This reloadability made Boxer primers the dominant standard in the United States and most Western commercial ammunition. Today, virtually all US-made ammunition uses Boxer primers, from budget plinking ammo to premium match-grade loads.

FAQ

Why are Boxer primers preferred for reloading?
The single centered flash hole allows easy decapping with standard reloading dies—just a simple punch pushes the spent primer out. The anvil comes out with the primer, leaving a clean pocket. This simplicity means any reloader can process thousands of cases efficiently with basic equipment.
Can I use Boxer primers in Berdan-primed cases?
No. Berdan cases have the anvil built into the primer pocket and multiple offset flash holes. The Boxer primer would sit on top of the anvil incorrectly, and the flash holes wouldn't align. Converting Berdan to Boxer is possible but requires drilling—not practical or safe for most reloaders.
How can I identify Boxer-primed brass?
Look inside the case mouth: Boxer cases have a single centered flash hole. You can also try the headstamp—most US manufacturers (Federal, Winchester, Remington, PMC) use Boxer. Foreign military surplus is often Berdan. When in doubt, the single vs. multiple flash hole test is definitive.
