This 40 S&W cartridge from Winchester’s Ranger T-Series line of ammunition is just what the doctor ordered for self-defense. (Assuming that the doctor specializes in ammo recommendations.) It features Winchester’s 165 grain jacketed hollow point projectile, which is engineered to extend six long and strong petals during penetration. The bullet is also immensely tough and thus able to retain a great portion of its weight during penetration, even if it must first have passed through a barrier en route to its target. This round’s exceptional stopping power is accompanied by premium components. Winchester’s primer ignites the instant a firing pin strikes it, and their propellant burns clean to keep a pistol accurate and working correctly while you’re out in the field. This round further features a nickel plated casing, facilitating the fashion in which it feeds and extracts in a semi-automatic, and protecting its contents from corrosion. Ballistics Test Summary

How does Winchester 165 Grain compare to other .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) self-defense loads? We conducted some tests with Clear Ballistics synthetic gelatin to find out. Following the FBI’s test protocol, we fired five rounds into the gel with a barrier of heavy clothing. We used a Glock 27 because the short barrel is similar to the type of compact handguns that are most likely to be carried concealed. Images of the fired bullets suspended in the gelatin are in the graphic above.

We measured the penetration depth of each bullet and then recovered them from the gel to measure the expanded diameter. You can find all of that data in the chart at the bottom of this page. Photos of the recovered bullets are below on the left and a slow motion video of the first bullet fired into the gel is down on the right.
