At the range, you can fire anything you like. The worst outcome will be poor accuracy or a few misfires. But out in the real world where any danger can lurk in wait for you, you had better chamber ammo precisely like this: SIG Sauer 40 S&W V-Crown.

This cartridge’s 180 grain bullet is a high-tech JHP. Its uniquely designed stacked hollow point cavity is strategically weakened by V-shaped skives, so it expands in an extremely predictable fashion across a wide range of velocities. The bullet’s toothed cannelure not only prevents setback that could impact ballistic performance, but further extends inward to root the jacket and core together for assured deep penetration. What the V-Crown achieves through all of this is a wide, deep wound channel which puts lurking dangers in the emergency room – if they’re so fortunate.

This American-made cartridge sports a slick nickel-plated brass case, so a semi-auto should have little difficulty reliably feeding and extracting it. Nickel also protects against gradual corrosion, and is even easier to spy in the chamber when it is dark outside. SIG even had the foresight to give this round low flash propellant. Fire it in the dark, and a blinding muzzle flash will not appear to render you unable to aim after firing your initial shot.
