The XTP is a jacketed hollow point bullet, perfected. In addition to reducing lead fouling and fortifying the bullet for deep penetration, the XTP’s jacket is designed to prevent damage on impact that may have hampered subsequent expansion, and serrated to help promote and control expansion at lower velocities. It also has a cannelure to help make sure the 460’s stiff kick doesn’t cause crimp jump.
Underwood’s high-quality finishing touches are worthy of so technologically advanced a bullet. The XTP is seated in a virgin brass case, which is nickel plated for corrosion resistance and smoother cycling through a lever gun. It’s also backed by low-flash powder: optimal if you would prefer not to be momentarily blinded by ignition when it’s dark outside.
Underwood reports 2,000 fps muzzle velocity out of a test barrel of unspecified length, and 0.160 G1 BC. That gives us this glimpse of the cartridge’s potential ballistic performance:
0yds: 2,000 fps | 2,132 ft lbs | -0.2”
50yds: 1,769 fps | 1,668 ft lbs | 1.3”
100yds: 1,559 fps | 1,296 ft lbs | 0.0”
150yds: 1,374 fps | 1,006 ft lbs | -4.9”
200yds: 1,219 fps | 792 ft lbs | -14.4"
