Century Arms was founded by a typewriter repairman in Vermont, of all places. By the ‘70s they became the largest firearm importer in the country, so naturally they have dealt in a lot of Russian firearms before. They also deal in Russian-made ammunition, which they brand as Red Army Standard.

This 5.45x39 ammo will treat you to the authentic experience the next time you fire your AK-74. (Shooters hunting for AK-47 ammo take note: This ain’t it.) In true Russian fashion each cartridge has a steel casing instead of brass. Russian manufacturers often favor steel casings because they cut down on costs substantially, and this ammo is priced to reflect that.

We understand the Russian government prefers their citizens to own steel cased ammo because it is non-reloadable. That’s one of the main drawbacks with steel casings, the other being that they allow more carbon fouling. What these rounds are not, however, are corrosive. Red Army Standard’s Berdan primers won’t rust out your action.

This round has a 59 grain full metal jacket projectile, with a boat tail that improves its ballistic coefficient. The bullet is fortified with a bimetal jacket, which contains steel and will draw a magnet. We have not yet tested this round’s muzzle velocity, but we would expect it’s within the 2,800 to 2,900 fps range. Perfect for target practice, and nice to have on hand if your AK-74 also enters into your emergency plans.
