What’s the difference between the AK-47 and the AK-74? Let us tell you: The AK-74 is about 57 percent better. Maybe one day Russia will introduce the AK-100, a perfect rifle in every way, but until that day comes we’re all going to need a steady fix of 5.45x39 ammo.

This authentic AK-74 cartridge sports a 59 grain projectile, with a muzzle velocity that is conventional for its class. The bullet’s boat tail helps it to preserve greater velocity downrange for both a flatter trajectory and more energy to deliver on impact. It also has the FMJ that a semi-auto range projectile needs, but take note that its steel content makes it magnetic.

Speaking of steel, this round’s casing is made of it too. That’s what makes it so accessibly priced, but steel’s inability to return to its original dimensions after ignition means this ammo is a “shoot it once” kind of deal. Most handloaders wouldn’t want to deal with this round’s Berdan primer anyway.

Red Army Standard’s primers aren’t like old mil-surp – they’re non-corrosive, so you won’t have to clean out your rifle with hot water after the fact.
