To a hunter, “going ballistic” doesn’t mean losing your temper. It means taking your time to set up the perfect shot, and finally gliding one well-aimed bullet into the quarry’s money spot.

Winchester’s Ballistic Silvertip 6.8 Western ammo is a great way to take deer, antelope and black bear at long range. This round’s 170 grain bullet is a “rapid controlled expansion polymer tip.” It lives up to its name thanks not just to its tip, but also its contoured jacket which peels back effectively. The non-bonded bullet’s alloyed lead core and thick jacket base work in service of deep penetration.

The Silvertip bullet’s boat tail, sleek nose profile and 2,920 fps muzzle velocity add up to a G7 0.284 ballistic coefficient. By Winchester’s measure, drop is 0” 200 yards, -6.7” 300 yards, -19.3” 400 yards, -38.5” 500 yards.

The bullet’s black coating? Lubalox, which (A) reduces fouling, and (B) looks neat (a legitimate design choice on Winchester’s part).

Loaded with reloadable nickel-plated brass cases. Nickel plating isn’t a miracle worker, but a little extra protection against tarnishing may just spell the difference between a trophy and no trophy. Who can say for sure?
