Release in 1902, this 114 year old round is even more incredible than when it started. In fact, the FBI has recently declared that it is the best round for self defense and are now switching over to this round, even though they previously shunned it, due to the death and wounding of three police officers. With the new advances in 9mm ammunition, this round has come to be an excellent round in self defense, not to mention its range and match capabilities.
When you buy Fiocchi, you expect nothing but the best. That's why Fiocchi decided to put Hornady XTP bullets in these 9mm rounds. Hornady XTP bullets feature massive, controlled expansion and supreme accuracy and are potentially the best self defense round on the market. When you want to defend your family, you can't settle for anything less than the best and these 124 grain XTP rounds definitely meet your needs.
For the past few decades, gelatin testing has been one of the primary tools used by ballistics experts to attempt to predict the real world performance of self-defense ammunition. Following the protocol first established by the FBI, we fired five rounds of Fiocchi 124 Grain into Clear Ballistics synthetic gelatin. Each round was fired from a Smith & Wesson M&P9C pistol from 10 feet away with a four-layer barrier of heavy fabric placed in front of the gelatin to simulate an attacker wearing thick clothing.
The data we gathered for penetration depth, expanded diameter, and bullet velocity is all in the chart below. The diagrams at the bottom of the page should give you an idea of how this load compares to other 9mm Luger (9x19) loads. Photos of the expanded bullets that were retrieved from the gel are in the slide show below on the left. On the right is a slow motion video that shows the first of the five bullets entering the gelatin block at approximately 1/300th the speed of real time.
Find out more about ballistic gel testing along the results of our gel tests from more than 150 other self-defense loads on Lucky Gunner Labs.
