Customer Reviews - Speer Ammunition
Speer ammunition is widely regarded as reliable and consistent, with many buyers trusting it for both self-defense and everyday carry. Users frequently praise its feeding reliability across various firearms, including pistols and carbines, noting few malfunctions or failures to fire. Accuracy and performance are commonly highlighted, with positive mentions for expansion and penetration, particularly with Gold Dot defensive loads. Many find Speer products to be clean-burning and suitable for both training and personal protection, though occasional comments mention minor corrosion or cosmetic discoloration on some rounds. Several reviewers consider the ammo a bit pricey, especially the premium self-defense lines, but most agree the quality justifies the cost. Feeding issues are occasionally reported in specific models, but overall satisfaction is high for reliability, cleanliness, and effective ballistic performance.
First let me say that Luckygunner 's testing of this round help me save money by not have to buy a lot of different defensive rounds to test in my weapon. I was able to narrow my search to 3 items. I'm part of my safety team at my church and was looking for a round that was accurate , function well and was consistent in its ability to expand upon impact, also very important not to over penetrate. I fire this in my CZ 75D compact 3.7 in barrel and it meets my expectations with no malfunctions. Thank You again for your testing of this and the other rounds ,it is very helpful and in the long run saved me a lot of time and money.
All the ballistic gel testing I found on this ammo through 4 layets of fabric show reliable, consistent expansion and penetration of > 10". When "bounce back" in the gel is taken into account, penetration is closer to 12". Great value in the Law Enforcement packaging 50 round boxes.
I purchased this ammo for personal defense in a concealed carry weapon. I have test fired it with 100% reliability thru the pistol I carry. I chose it after researching ballistics and reviews and also on recommendation. I pray it will never have to be used for its intended purpose.
Gold Dot bullets use Speer's proprietary Uni-Cor electrochemical bonding process that molecularly fuses the jacket to the core at the atomic level. This prevents jacket-core separation on impact—the leading cause of hollow point failure. The result is consistent expansion and deep penetration through barriers, which is why it's trusted by thousands of law enforcement agencies.
What is Gold Dot G2?
Gold Dot G2 is the second generation of the Gold Dot design, featuring a shallow dish in the nose instead of a traditional hollow cavity. This elastomer-filled nose provides more consistent expansion across barrier types and velocities. G2 was developed specifically to meet evolving FBI ammunition testing protocols.
What is Speer Lawman?
Speer Lawman is a training ammunition line designed to match the ballistic profile of Gold Dot duty ammunition. Using TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) bullets at the same velocities and weights as corresponding Gold Dot loads, Lawman allows officers to train with ammunition that shoots identically to their carry rounds at a fraction of the cost.
