Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Speer 90 gr Gold Dot from a Glock 42 from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.
How this load compares to other .380 Auto (ACP) loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.
We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Liked the ballistic reviews of this round. Carry it in my Sig 9mms. However, it is alittle unpredictable in feeding in my LCP II, so I have switched to Hornady XTP. The JHP cavity is so large on the Gold Dot that I think it does not feed as well as the Hornady, with a smaller JHP cavity, in an LCP II. A great expanding bullet with good penetration does no good if it jams in feeding in your gun!
Works fine in S&W EZ 380
There were some problems with my wife's favorite Inceptor loads in the Smith, but these Speers worked flawlessly. No report on terminal performance (which I hope continues), but Speer GDs are among the best in that respect, and I can only assume tha also applies to the .380.
Great Ammo for the New M&P 380,
loaded perfectly, consistent fire, no FTF, or FTE, I ran through a box with no issues. I have made it my official ammo in my pocket guns, and my wifes 2 guns. She had no issue in her Glock 42 or Kimber Micro-carry
Personally Cannot Recommend for Glock 42
I want to love this round, I really do. Per the Lucky Gunner Labs, this round provides excellent expansion with middling penetration for the caliber, which would be just fine for me. However, I experienced four FTFs in 50 rounds out of a broken-in Glock 42 with this cartridge. I believe it's the big, soft, ashtray-shaped hollowpoint that causes the trouble. Have now switched to Hornady Critical Defense for carry, with zero failures in 50 rounds one-handed/weak-handed (75 rounds total) so far. Otherwise, flawless Speer quality, and Lucky Gunner is fabs and marvy as always!
My .380 CCW Carry Ammo Choice
All the ballistic gel testing I found on this ammo through 4 layets of fabric show reliable, consistent expansion and penetration of > 10". When "bounce back" in the gel is taken into account, penetration is closer to 12". Great value in the Law Enforcement packaging 50 round boxes.
One of the best .380 rounds for defense
I have a few backup .380s
(Kahr p380, Lcp, tcp, g42, m&p bodyguard, colt pocketlite) etc.. and aside from the critical defense round from Hornady, Speer Gold Dot is my ccw ammo choice when it comes to the two rounds I’ve found in any gun if they won’t feed one they will the other, and from a barrel length ranging of
2.5” - 3.25”/3.5” you get consistent expansion and at least 10” + penetration and REALISTICALLY that’s enough.
Performs well in both my Glock 42s
The Speer Gold Dot is currently my load of choice for my G42s. It runs flawless in both of them and most all the gel tests that I have seen show reliable expansion through clothing barriers. I'd like to see a 12 inch minimum but I feel this is a good round for duty back up gun use.
My range time with this ammo in a Glock 42: 3 Failure to Eject; 2 Failure to Feed. (These failures happened during the first 18 rounds fired).
However, there could have been issues with the pistol itself, so be cautious when considering this ammo.
Great price and great service
Needed some gold.and found Lucky Gunter to have the best price. After the sale, I have been blown away by their level of commitment to the Second Amendment and outstanding customer service. I will be shopping here again for my specialty ammo needs.
Excellent self defense ammo! Lucky Gunner as always, delivered FAST!!
This is outstanding self defense ammo go ahead and order it! Reliable!!
As Always, Lucky Gunner delivered my order FAST! Placed order FRIDAY night and the package arrived Monday morning!
The only problem was one I made on my address. But a call to you for a "how to" and I contacted the shipper and everything was ok. Ive ordered from you before, with the same good results. Keep up the good work!
Waited on backorder since Feb. at another dealer. Found your site by accident, lucky I did. You had the product in stock and at a better price.
Ammo performs better than expected in a Colt 380 Gov't model.
Trial Run For the P238
Appears to be the usual good stuff from Speer. No malfunctions and accuracy was excellent. Ran the Gold Dot to be certain it cycled and the P238 "liked it." This stuff is somewhat hard to find, so my hat is off to LG for recognizing its place in the 380 market.
Now, let's find some 9mm standard pressure HST in 124 and 147.
