Copper-Plated Round Nose (CPRN) bullets feature a lead core electroplated with a thin layer of copper. This plating dramatically reduces lead fouling in the barrel compared to bare lead bullets, allowing higher velocities and more rounds between cleanings. The smooth copper surface also improves feeding in semi-automatic pistols. CPRN bullets are popular for high-volume training where the cost savings over FMJ add up, while avoiding the heavy fouling of bare lead. Speer, Winchester, and Federal all offer CPRN ammunition.
CPRN costs less than FMJ while offering similar feeding reliability and much less fouling than bare lead. For high-volume training, CPRN saves money without the downsides of lead bullets. FMJ is better for hotter loads as the jacket handles higher velocities.
Can CPRN be used in semi-auto pistols?
Yes, that's a primary advantage. The copper plating provides a smooth surface that feeds reliably in most semi-autos. Some tight-tolerance guns may still prefer FMJ, but standard pistols handle CPRN well.
