It was 3am. My brother Darryl and I were camping deep in the woods, sound asleep thanks to the chamomile tea we had brewed over the campfire earlier that evening. Suddenly we were awoken by loud rustling just outside our tent. I cautiously opened the flap only to confirm what I feared most. It was the biggest, meanest squirrel Darryl and I had ever seen in our lives.

The squirrel immediately spotted us. It let out a low, menacing chitter, stood up on its hind legs, and gave us a look that froze us both to our cores. The brute must have been 11 – no, scratch that – 12 inches tall!

Darryl turned to me and said “Well, brother, it’s been good knowing you. It looks like we are about to die.” And you know what? He would have been right … if I hadn’t remembered to bring my trusty 22 LR pistol and a box of Remington 22 Cyclone ammunition, that is.

I aimed the high-velocity round square at the monster squirrel’s heart, said a prayer in my mind, and squeezed the trigger. BANG! The 36 grain lead hollow point bullet streaked against the night sky and collided precisely where I had aimed it. The LHP set straight to work delivering the terminal expansion I had already watched kill countless squirrels before. The beast buckled over exactly where it once stood.

Darryl hugged me and thanked me for having such good foresight. “Don’t worry about it, bro,” I said. “Now try and get some sleep. It’s a quarter-mile hike back to our apartment building, and I’d like to start right at the break of dawn. I need to write about our harrowing squirrel encounter for the good folks at Lucky Gunner.
