Lead Semi-Wadcutter Hollow Point (LSWCHP) bullets combine the sharp-shouldered profile of a semi-wadcutter with a hollow point cavity. This design cuts clean holes in paper for scoring while also providing expansion capability for defense. The FBI famously adopted the .38 Special +P LSWCHP ("FBI Load") in the 1970s after extensive testing showed excellent terminal performance. The sharp shoulder creates a larger initial wound channel before expansion occurs. LSWCHPs are revolver-specific due to the non-aerodynamic profile and unjacketed construction.
The FBI Load refers to .38 Special +P 158gr LSWCHP ammunition adopted by the FBI in the 1970s. It became the standard for .38 Special defensive use due to proven effectiveness. Federal, Remington, and Winchester all produce versions.
Can LSWCHP be used in semi-autos?
No. The sharp shoulder and lead construction prevent reliable feeding. These bullets are designed exclusively for revolvers. For semi-autos, use JHP with a rounded ogive.
