Soft-Point Boat Tail (SP-BT) bullets combine the proven terminal performance of soft point construction with the superior ballistic coefficient of a boat tail design. The tapered base reduces aerodynamic drag, allowing the bullet to maintain velocity better at extended ranges and resist wind drift. This makes SP-BT bullets ideal for hunting situations where shots may exceed 200 yards. The exposed lead tip initiates expansion on impact while the jacket controls penetration. SP-BT is a staple configuration from manufacturers like Hornady, Sierra, and Nosler.
Under 200 yards, performance is similar. Beyond 200 yards, SP-BT maintains velocity and resists wind better due to higher BC. For open country hunting, SP-BT is the better choice.
Does boat tail affect terminal performance?
Minimally. The boat tail is only at the base and doesn't contact tissue during initial penetration. Terminal performance is determined by the nose and jacket construction, which are similar to flat-base SP bullets.
