Video Transcript:
American Eagle ammo is one of the most popular brands from the Federal Ammunition Company. Federal is owned by the US-based ATK, the parent company of lots of other respected ammo brands, like CCI and Speer. The Federal American Eagle brand is well known for high performance at a modest cost. We got an opportunity to shoot through a box of their .22 long rifle load.
This American Eagle bulk pack contains 10 boxes of 40 rounds each, for a total of 400 rounds of multi-purpose high velocity ammo. This packaging method provides a nice way to split up your ammo if you don't want to shoot it all in one sitting. The .22 cartridge used features a 38-grain, copper-plated lead hollow point bullet.
The thin copper plating prevents excessive lead fouling, and the bullet is covered in a light coat of wax for lubrication. With a hollow tip and a rapid muzzle velocity of 1,260 feet per second, this ammo could just as easily be used for small game hunting as for target shooting. For either of those applications, you'll want consistent accuracy, and this American Eagle load has that too. We fired a 10 round group at 50 yards using a plain off the shelf Marlin .795 rifle on a benchrest. With a 4-power scope, and a somewhat brisk rate of fire, we were able to get a one-hole group that measured just under an inch in diameter.
Reliability wasn't bad for a bulk pack, but not perfect. Our Ruger SR22 pistol, which seems to feed most other ammo well, wasn't able to go through a full magazine of American Eagle without a feeding problem. The issues were most likely due to the hollow point bullets, which are prone to causing problems in certain types of actions.
Ignition was consistent, and we didn't experience any light primer strikes in our six test guns. This American Eagle bulk pack is priced at just a penny or two around more than some of the most affordable budget ammo. For that, you get an incredible amount of quality and performance from a round that can be used for planking, hunting, or casual target practice.

Ran a few thousand rounds through my Ruger Mark III's and Ruger 25 shot Tactical 10/22 with only 1 jam. Since they are hollow points I would say that they rank near the top for must haves with your plinking ammo. (Posted on 10/13/12)Performance Value Quality - great, no problems Review by mike
